"Just a Firecracker - 2 Buddies and a Bomb" DVD
In addition to the annual Burn Awareness Week program, specifically designed for children in Grades K-7, the BC Professional Fire Fighters have now created an informative DVD, "Just a Firecracker - 2 Buddies and a Bomb", which targets the children in Grades 8 - 12.
We believe this is an extremely powerful educational tool which will provide support in the teaching of fire and burn safety issues.
Review from Video Librarian:
"Just a Firecracker II: 2 Buddies and a Bomb ***1/2
(2009) 15 min. DVD: $39.95. Oak Bay Johnny Productions (dist. by Hiline Videoworks). PPR.
Based on a true story (and starring the actual victims), this cautionary program tells a shocking tale of the dangers of homemade explosives using a tone reminiscent of the scare-tactic driver education videos of the ’50s but incorporating an edginess (including some crude language and sexual innuendo) that will make it likely to connect with contemporary young adults.
Filmmaker Andrew Naysmith combines interviews, actual emergency room footage, and re-enactments as teenagers Troy and Jerrod tell their story about a pipe bomb explosion and its digit-destroying aftermath. As depicted here, a Halloween gathering of friends goes horribly awry when the device accidentally goes off in the hands of both young men. The bloody visuals, including finger stumps and mangled thumbs, may be disturbing to some, as will scenes of the removal of dried gauze from injured limbs.
Nevertheless, 2 Buddies and a Bomb—sponsored by the British Columbia Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund—presents a powerful message that could help save others from making the same mistake. Highly recommended."
