Burn Survivor Heidi Cave Finds Hope in Tragedy

“Heidi Cave is one of the most courageous people you’ll ever meet,” IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger said of the BC Burn Survivor, who was a guest speaker at the International Association of Fire Fighters Convention this week in Toronto. A story about her appears in this week’s IAFF Online.

Heidi was honoured at a Benefit Concert in May 2005, which raised $22,200.59 for the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund . The fundraiser enabled the Burn Fund to purchase a vacuum assisted closure suction machine for the BCPFF Burn & Plastic Surgery Unit at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH). Use of this machine often prevents the necessity for large operations, like skin grafting and skin flaps. The machine is attached to a sponge in the wound, which siphons off fluid—thereby decreasing bacterial load—and assists in the development of healing tissue.
