With province-wide donations from fire fighter locals, corporate sponsors and the public, the BC Professional Fire Fighters' Burn Fund has made over $2 million in donations to the BCPFF Burn, Plastic and Trauma Unit at VGH. The commitment to support the Burn Unit is ongoing, and the Burn Fund will continue to fund essential burn survivor support programs, staff training and statistical and research programs. In November 2002, the Burn Fund launched a fundraising campaign to sponsor a facility for one of the world's top specialists in burns and plastic surgery research. Both the research facility and the Burn Unit will bear the name 'BC Professional Fire Fighters' in honour of the Burn Fund's significant contribution.

"The Burn Fund has made the job of treating unpleasant burn injuries easier."

Past Medical Director, BC Professional Fire Fighters' Burn, Plastic and Trauma Unit at Vancouver General Hospital
Clinical Associate Professor Research & Surgery, UBC

According to Dr. James Boyle, a severely burned patient's skin is often so damaged it is difficult to get a proper reading on their condition. It costs $30 to $40 thousand to purchase a metabolic research cart which measures how healthy burn injured patients are, and how they are responding to major trauma. "I could go on forever about the Burn Fund," says Dr. Boyle. "It's bought the [Burn] Unit a metabolic research cart, and individual fridges for easy access to the huge amounts of liquid a burn patient must consume. From instructional and relaxation videos and tapes, to patient-controlled analgesic pumps for pain management - the Burn Fund makes a difference for burn injured patients in the hospital, and for a long time afterwards."

"Burns injuries are terrible. They are painful, disfiguring and life-long. It's nice to know we can count on the Burn Fund to help us with better equipment and patient care items so that we can do our job and support burn survivors," says Dr. Boyle.
